Electrical faults and home electrics: what to tell an electrician

A homeowner guide to describing electrical faults, planned installations and testing requirements. This guide is designed to help you have a better first conversation and make a more informed decision, not to replace assessment by an appropriately competent professional.

Describe exactly what you observe

Tell the electrician which rooms, sockets, lights or circuits are affected, what happened immediately beforehand and whether the problem is constant or intermittent.

Treat warning signs seriously

Burning smells, heat damage, arcing, exposed live parts or repeated unexplained tripping need appropriate professional attention. Do not remove covers or attempt live electrical diagnosis yourself.

For additions, explain how the space will be used

For new sockets, lighting or alterations, explain the intended appliances, layout and future use so the installation can be planned appropriately.

Questions customers commonly ask

Why does a circuit breaker keep tripping?

There are multiple possible causes, including an appliance or circuit fault. Repeated unexplained tripping should be investigated rather than simply reset indefinitely.

What helps an electrician before a visit?

Photos of the consumer unit where safe, affected locations, any labels or fault indications and a clear timeline of the issue.
